▼Background of the Project
Thank you for visiting this page.
My name is Shunsuke Doi (22), the representative of the project. I would like to share with you the origin of the project.
When I was in primary school, I spent three years in Zimbabwe because of my father's work. There, I saw children my age begging for food on the streets.
“When I grow up, I definitely want to do something about it”
After graduating from college, I took a gap year in order to put this desire into action. It was then that I had a fateful meeting in Tokyo.
Dr. Isaac. (pictured on the right) was a doctor from Zimbabwe who had been living in Japan since 2003 and had been involved in medical and humanitarian aid activities around the world.
His vision was to give children in his home country the same educational opportunities he had received. Our vision came together and the two of us traveled to Zimbabwe just one month later to conduct field research.
▼ Severe Educational Disparities in Zimbabwe
A nationwide uniform examination is given in the final year of primary, junior high, and senior high school, and the results of the examination determine the students' paths.
The following is a comparison of schools in rural and urban areas, where students are competing against each other in these different learning environments.
▼ Issues at Kandava Primary School
Our pilot school is in the Kandava district, located 90 minutes from the capital city of Harare.
In this area, where agriculture is the main industry, the pass rate for the secondary school graduation certification exam is stagnant at only 6% (Zimbabwean national average: 25%).
Local community members live near the school, and based on the strong relationship of trust with the local community, we will develop sustainable educational support.
We have obtained permission from Kandava Elementary School to make the donation and to use its name.
The Reality of the harsh fetching Water
-
• 30 minutes of water fetching every day results in 180 hours of lost valuable learning opportunities per year.
-
• Fatigue from heavy effort reduces students' energy to concentrate in class.
▼Solution: Installation of a Solar-Powered Electric Pump
Budget: 250,000 yen ($1,667)
Complete set of solar power generation system, pump piping and wiring equipment
Expected Effects
-
1. Relief from 30 minutes of daily water pumping work for 885 students
-
2. Improvement of post-secondary graduation exam pass rate (long-term goal: 20%)
▼Project Schedule
We will travel to the site again in February 2025 to install pumps and repair classrooms with local residents of Kandava Elementary School and members of Yume Iziya.
Preparation Period (December 2024 - January 2025)
Finalization of materials procurement and construction plan
Implementation Period (February 2025)
Installation of solar panel electric pumps
Inspection and Reporting Period (March-April 2025)
Confirmation of usage status completion report
▼VISION
The name "Yume Iziya" combines "Yume" meaning "dream" in Japanese, with "Iziya" meaning "born from sweat" in Shona, the primary language of Zimbabwe.
"Through hard work, dreams will come true."
This message serves both as inspiration to Zimbabwe's children and as the guiding principle for our activities.
Let's take the first step toward realizing the dreams of Kandava. This small beginning will grow into hope for the entire community and become a legacy for generations to come.
