I'm Irene Evbade-dan. I'm currently a final year student at Sophia University (Tokyo). I was born and brought up in Gifu (close to Nagoya) as a Nigerian/Japanese mixed. It was not easy for me to grow up as a minority in this country. I'd been asking myself, "Is my hair too outstanding?", "Is my skin too dark?" since I could remember.

 

After finishing my highschool, I move to Tokyo for my university. And I found this small community which I have been long for when I was little; the African Kids Club. 

 

 

 

 

ABOUT AFRICAN KIDS CLUB

 

We are an umbrella community of Africa Japan Forum (supporting and working with people from African countries). We are providing platform for children living in Japan who have African background. We have been holding various activities (cooking class, hairstyle lecture, football game…) since 2005. I've been participating AKC as an internship student since 2015.

 

 

 

 

 

OUR AIM

 

Summer Camp is the biggest event of our annual activity. Last year, more than 50 people (including staff) participated. Spending one night with other African Kids enables them to feel the connection and to share their story. This year, we are trying to raise donation. It will make the participation fee lower, so that the wider range of children could participate. Also, it will be used, for example, to buy chicken and vegetables, which will turn into delicious tomato stew. We will devote extra donation to provide children some fun activities (such as buying soccer ball) and to the future event. (We are currently planning to have Painting Class, Christmas Party, etc… )

 

 

 

THEY NEED A PLACE TO TALK ABOUT THEMSELVES

 

Being an African Kids in this country is sometimes hard. If they could spend time with other children who have similar background, their eyes would be opened widely. They could feel proud of themselves being the precious African Kids! Last year, one of our participants (↓the boy on the right) told us he realized that being African Kids is the coolest thing. He wrote us a long letter saying his dream now is to be a carpenter in Nigeria.
