John Lucas, Singer-Songwriter / Gospel DirectorOriginally from Jamaica, now celebrating 25 years in Japan. Hello! I'm John Lucas, a gospel singer from Jamaica who now calls Japan my second home. This year marks my 25th anniversary in Japan, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported me over the years. To celebrate this milestone, I’m planning to produce a 25th Anniversary Gospel Album and embark on a nationwide concert tour across six cities in Japan. And I’d love for you to be part of this journey.

About This Project - Why Gospel, and Why Now?Gospel music was born in African-American churches, carrying deep messages of faith, hope, and overcoming hardship. But you don’t need to follow any specific religion to feel its power. In Japan, less than 1% of the population identifies as Christian.  Yet gospel music has been embraced here—not because of religion, but because of its message of love, strength, and divine encouragement.Through gospel’s uplifting melodies and soul-stirring lyrics, we can:-　Encourage the heart-　Ignite hope-　Connect people through love and music whether you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, struggling with parenting, or simply looking for a spark of hope-   Gospel music has the power to sit beside you, lift you up, and remind you: you are not alone. This tour is all about sharing that “song of hope” and God’s message of love and healing with people across Japan.

▼Project Goals & Vision  

Why I Started This Project Connecting Hearts Through Music With Gratitude for 25 YearsI came to Japan from Jamaica with one dream: to bring hope to the world through music. What I found here was something even greater—a deep connection beyond language.25 years ago, I started my first gospel choir in Sendai with just 25 members. From that small beginning, gospel music slowly spread throughout communities, and today I lead gospel classes in 10 regions across Japan. Through this journey, I’ve experienced over and over again the healing power of music.Then came the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. I, too, was affected—and resumed my activities in Ishinomaki, one of the hardest-hit areas. Even in the darkest times, we chose to believe in hope. We held charity concerts and used gospel to bring light and comfort to hurting hearts.Gospel is not just about singing. It gently lifts those in pain, embraces those in loneliness, and helps people find their smiles again.That’s why I feel a deep calling to give back to Japan—my second home—through the gift of music.As I mark 25 years here, I want to show gratitude to everyone who supported me, and send a message of encouragement to those I’ve yet to meet. This project is my way of sharing a song of hope with the entire country.Let’s create a new future together—through music, through connection, through love.

こんにちは！ジャマイカ出身で、現在は日本を第二の故郷として暮らしているゴスペルシンガーのジョン・ルーカスです。今年、日本での活動25周年を迎えるにあたり、これまで支えてくださったすべての皆さまに心から感謝の気持ちをお伝えしたいと思います。この節目を記念し、「25周年記念ゴスペルアルバム」の制作と、日本全国6都市を巡るコンサートツアーを計画しています。ぜひこの旅にご一緒いただければ嬉しいです。

 

▼プロジェクトの背景

このプロジェクトについて ー なぜゴスペルなのか、そしてなぜ今なのかゴスペル音楽は、アフリカ系アメリカ人の教会で生まれ、信仰・希望・困難の克服といった深いメッセージを受け継いできました。しかし、その力を感じるために特定の宗教を信じる必要はありません。日本では、キリスト教徒は人口の1％未満と言われていますが、それにもかかわらず、ゴスペル音楽は宗教ではなく「愛」「強さ」「神からの励まし」というメッセージによって受け入れられてきました。

 

ゴスペルの高揚感のあるメロディーと心を揺さぶる歌詞を通して、私たちは

心を励まし

希望を灯し

愛と音楽で人と人をつなぐことができます

 

仕事に追われて疲れているとき、子育てで悩んでいるとき、あるいは少しの希望を探しているときでも

ゴスペルはあなたのそばに寄り添い、背中を押し、「あなたは一人ではない」と思い出させてくれます。このツアーは、そんな「希望の歌」と、神の愛と癒しのメッセージを日本中の人々と分かち合うことを目的としています。

▼プロジェクトの目的とビジョン

音楽で心をつなぐー25年への感謝を込めて私は「音楽で世界に希望を届けたい」という夢を胸に、ジャマイカから日本にやって来ました。そこで出会ったのは、言葉を超えた深いつながりでした。

25年前、仙台でたった25名のメンバーと最初のゴスペルクワイアを立ち上げました。そこから少しずつコミュニティに広がり、今では日本全国10地域でゴスペルクラスを指導しています。その歩みの中で、私は何度も音楽の癒しの力を目の当たりにしてきました。

そして2011年、東日本大震災が発生。私自身も被災し、特に被害の大きかった石巻で活動を再開しました。最も暗い時期にあっても、私たちは希望を信じることを選び、チャリティコンサートを開き、ゴスペルで傷ついた心に光と慰めを届けました。

ゴスペルは単なる歌ではありません。痛みに寄り添い、孤独を抱える人を包み込み、再び笑顔を取り戻す力があります。だからこそ、私は音楽という贈り物を通して、日本という第二の故郷に恩返しをしたいと強く感じています。

日本での25周年を迎えるにあたり、これまで支えてくださった方々への感謝と、これから出会う方々への励ましのメッセージを届けたい。このプロジェクトは、日本全国に「希望の歌」を広げるための私の挑戦です。音楽で、つながりで、愛で――共に新しい未来をつくりましょう。
