• Purpose

Animal hoarding can be seen anywhere in the country. It is said that half of the cats in local animal protection centers are brought from animal hoarding. This is a social problem arisen from aging, poverty, isolation and ignorance. Social welfare, animal welfare and owners are facing serious trouble; how to deal with excessive number of cats.    

To prevent reproduction, we need to do sterilization surgeries for cats at the same time. However, an animal hospital can receive two to three cats a day, not dozens. Now, we need a new place where cats can be received and treated as many as possible together at a low price.

The first facility in Japan in a local government, not only for outdoor cats but also for house cats.

Background of animal hording is too complicated for a single party to handle, but when everyone concerned, including public and private sectors, works hand-in-hand, we can find a solution. The Nyangata Center Clinic will be the important place where vet do surgeries at local government’s facility with a help of volunteer staff. If we can do sterilization at once, the number of cats taken to the Animal Protection Center will be reduced. As a result, cats in the center receive more intensive care to be healthier and find new homes, instead of putting down. What we are looking for is reducing the number of unhappy cats in the truest sense.

We hope this project become a role model to change the situation for better future; no cats suffer.

Preliminary application is necessary. Please contact Niigata City Animal Protection Center or Niigata Doubutsu Network (NDN)

 

• Who to Use

House cats from animal hoarding or suspect of animal hoarding 

Outdoor cats from animal hoarding or suspect of animal hoarding

Owners of cats facing economic difficulties  

 

• Surgery

As a rule, once in a weekday. 09:00-17:00 

Maximum number of the cats accepted will be about ten for the beginning.

 

• Fee

8,000 yen for a female and 4,000 yen for a male

 *Grants and subsidies can be used at the same time. 

 

 

• Management and Coordination

Niigata Prefecture Animal Welfare Association is responsible for the operation. 

Veterinarians take turns to do surgical procedure once a week in an existing operation room in the Niigata City Animal Protection Center working with vet technicians and volunteer staff.

A container house for cats to stay overnight will be settled inside Niigata City Animal Protection Center. The facility includes well insulated wall, air conditioner, lights, windows, ventilation fan, two sets of doors which prevent cats from escaping.  

 

 

• Receive and Return

Cats are supposed to be taken to the clinic on the day of the operation and returned to the owner the same day. Overnight stay is also available.
