‘Industrial Heritage’ is gradually become a term more widely recognized and understood in recent years, an outstanding example of this is the architecture and history of ORIMONO SANKO-KAN MUSEUM. Historically used as a textile and silk factory that was recently designated, and now holds the status of ‘Heritage of Industrial Modernization’ by METI in Japan. The factory’s technology and culture has long been demonstrated since 1877, clearly evident with a visit to this museum. The NOKOGIRI-YANE (sawtooth roof) is a remarkable example of an aesthetic and functional feature that was carefully designed to let both sunlight and fresh air into the building. The iron frame, sawtooth design and construction method was imported from Europe and then adapted to align with Japanese construction techniques and harsher local climate.

The efforts to create this unique architecture and its role played throughout the Industrial Age should be handed down for future generations. Mr.Hasegawa is the inheritor of this former factory and its legacy, and his great effort to maintain the building and overall contribution to the local community deserves recognition and I would like to express my support to his idea of restoration and wish for the success of this project.
