The "Shirakabe (white-stucco wall) Restoration Project" to restore the outer wall of an old traditional Japanese building by using traditional techniques, is an important part of our overall project to restore and revitalize an entire house, recently rescued from demolition.  

この「白壁再生プロジェクト」は、伝統的な日本の古民家の外壁を、伝統的技法で再生するものですが、これは私たちの全体プロジェクトの重要な一部を構成するものです。それは、取り壊しの危機から救った古民家全体を再活用することです。

 

This building is located in the very center of Nantan City, 30km west of Kyoto City. This central area was a flourishing castle town.  During the Meiji Era (late19th-early 20th century), the building originally used as a sake brewery was built on land allocated for feudal lords' accommodation when they were ordered by the Shogun to travel to Edo (Tokyo) during the early 17th to late 19th century.

この古民家は、京都市の西３０ｋｍに位置する南丹市のまさに中心部にあります。南丹市中心地域はかつて繁栄する城下町でした。明治時代（１９世紀後半～２０世紀はじめ）、この古民家は当初造り酒屋として建築されましたが、その敷地は１７世紀はじめ～１９世紀後半にかけて将軍に命じられて江戸に参勤する諸大名たちの宿(本陣)としてあてがわれていた場所です。

After the second World War,  due to the rapid growth of Japanese economy, the center of Nantan experienced major changes resulting in many of the old traditional buildings being demolished one after another.  In recent years many businesses have been vacated and buildings stand empty. This building stands out as a symbol that reflects the former prosperity of the area.  It is important historical value for the local community and the city of Nantan.

戦後、日本経済の急速な成長によって、南丹の中心部は大きな変化にみまわれ、その結果として多くの伝統的な古民家は次々と取り壊されました。近年では多くの商店は閉じられ、空き家のままとなっています。この古民家は、この地域のかつての繁栄の名残を映す象徴の一つとなっており、地元コミュニティに南丹市にとって重要な歴史的価値を持っています。

 

Two years ago after hearing of the owner's plan to demolish the building, We made a proposal to restore and reuse it.  After many discussions, the owner finally agreed with our proposal and our project started.

２年前、この古民家を取り壊すというオーナーの計画の話を耳にした後、私たちはこの古民家を修復し再活用する提案をしました。何度も話し合いを重ねた末、オーナーも私たちの提案に最終的に同意して下さり、私たちのプロジェクトが始まりました。

 

The building when renovations are completed will be used for office space, meeting rooms, and guestrooms for various community revitalization work.  And the most important function is that young artisans will live in the building. These artisans are some of the first graduates from the Kyoto College of Arts and Crafts newly established 4 years ago in Nantan City.  They spent the 4 years in Nantan while studying and have now decided to live here. This young energy is the heart of our revitalization project for both the building and the community.

この古民家は、リノベーションが完成した後、様々なコミュニティ再活性化活動のための事務所スペースや会議室、ゲストルームとして使用されます。そして、最も重要な機能は、若い伝統工芸職人たちがこの古民家に住むことです。この伝統工芸職人たちは、４年前に南丹市に新設された京都美術工芸大学の最初の卒業生たちです。彼らは学びの４年間を南丹で過ごし、ここに暮らすことに決めました。この若い力こそが、この古民家と地元コミュニティの両方の再活性化を目指す私たちのプロジェクトの中核です。

 

The aim of the Shirakabe Restoration Project is to repair and renovate a traditional Meji era building and importantly, at the same time, with an application of beautiful stucco, help give hope and pride back to the local community.　 Members of the local community and supporters will help with the application of the traditional stucco painting using traditional techniques under the supervision of a master plasterer. The wall will in addition become outdoor screens to project young people's work.

この「白壁再生プロジェクト」の目的は、この古民家を修繕しリノベートするものと同時に、より重要なことは、美しい漆喰を用いることを通じ、コミュニティに希望を与え、誇りを取り戻すための支えとなるこです。地元コミュニティや支援者たちは、左官職人の監修の下、伝統的な漆喰塗り技法を用いて白壁塗りを手伝います。更に、この白壁は、若手の作品を上映するアウトドアスクリーンとしても活用していきます。
