Our goal is to enact the Future Generations Act in Japan, which requires state and local governments to think about the long-term effect of the laws and regulations and how they will impact future generations. We intend to make a recommendation at the “United Nations Summit of the Future” September 2024 in New York.

What is the Future Generations Act?

It is a law that requires state and local governments to think about the well-being of future generations and not discard any written record. A similar law has been in force since 2015 in Wales. There is also a growing global trend toward protection of future generations.

Goals:

-To enact the Future Generations Act in Japan by 2030.

-To create a society where citizens of all ages and all backgrounds can discuss important issues from a long-term perspective.

Objectives:

- To encourage more than 500 local governments in Japan to adopt the future generations declaration (e.g., there are 1,724 local governments in Japan as of Sept. 2023).

- Collect signatures from more than 4.2 million citizen supporters (3.5% of Japan’s population).

Use of funds:

- Production cost (e.g., booklet, website, etc.).

- Cost of lobbying (e.g., transportation, personnel, production, and training).

- Cost of maintaining organizational infrastructure (e.g., accounting tools, subscription fees for groupware, etc.).

Who we are?

We are an independent citizen-led project launched in July 2022 which is not funded by any government organizations or political groups.
