Overview
Since its opening in 1990, Kaiyukan has been sharing knowledge about natural environment and the ecology of the creatures found on "the Great Barrier Reef ", the world's largest coral reef in the north-east of Australia, through the replicated Great Barrier Reef exhibition.
The tank is currently undergoing renovation with the theme of “the vitality of corals” (scheduled to open in autumn 2024).
Through on-site diving research in 2016 and 2019 for the tank renovation, we felt a strong desire to inform more people about the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and the wonder of life, so we decided to hold a crowdfunding.
Your donation, along with contribution from Kaiyukan, will be donated to a local NPO working to conserve the Great Barrier Reef.
Through this crowdfunding, we wish to inform people of the Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs, hoping that Kaiyukan will act as a bridge to connect the thoughts of each supporter to the future of the sea.

What we can do
with your donation.
Discover the impact of your generosity to protect the vibrant ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world's most iconic treasures.
Your contribution funds an ambitious coral biodiversity conservation initiative, led by the "Great Barrier Reef Legacy," a non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding this natural wonder for generations to come.

Use of funds
○ Target amount:
- 10 million yen
○ Project details:
- Donation to the NPO "Great Barrier Reef Legacy"
- Fee (17% + tax)
- Other miscellaneous expenses such as for PR activities and rewards
*As this project is an all-in format, even if the total amount of donation does not reach the target amount by the deadline, we will make up the shortfall with our own funds and make donations to the NPO.
*Please note that in the unlikely event of receiving unexpectedly more donation than Kaiyukan is able to utilize, we may bring forward the deadline for fundraising. In that case, all rewards will be suspended and you will no longer be able to make donations.
*This information is provided with the permission of the NPO "Great Barrier Reef Legacy" to make a donation and to use its name on this project page.
About Great Barrier Reef Legacy
The Great Barrier Reef Legacy, are the pioneers of "The FOREVER REEF PROJECT."
This project aims to collect all 415 coral species found on the Great Barrier Reef for their ultimate conservation, and to make live fragments, genetic material and tissue samples available for reef research and restoration efforts.
Your support through crowdfunding is pivotal in enabling us to expand our coral collection efforts and accelerate coral reef conservation initiatives. Join us on this extraordinary journey as we strive to protect and nurture the Great Barrier Reef, ensuring its enduring legacy for all to cherish.
Message from Great Barrier Reef Legacy

The Forever Reef Project is the world's first living coral biobank dedicated to preserving Great Barrier Reef coral biodiversity.
Our mission is simple — we will collect all 415 species of Great Barrier Reef corals and keep them alive in our new state of the art facility for their ultimate conservation, and to make live fragments, tissue samples, and genetic material available to aid in reef research and restoration efforts. Essentially the Forever Reef Project is a living coral ark.
Corals are the perfect organism to keep in a living biobank style facility as they effectively live forever under the correct conditions, and within our facility we can not only provide, but control these correct conditions, so that our corals will thrive.
We’ve already collected nearly 200 coral species representing approximately 45% of the coral species found on the Great Barrier Reef, making this project the most extensive conservation effort for corals in Australia.
However, time is of the essence, and the window of opportunity to collect the remaining coral species is rapidly closing as with every new coral bleaching event we are losing the most vulnerable corals and reefs.
We are extremely excited to be working with Kaiyukan, Osaka Aquarium, who are supporting us with an extremely generous donation so we can collect all remaining coral species on the Great Barrier Reef by 2026 and keep them alive for generations to come.
Only together we know, there are no Barriers too Great to save our Reefs!
What is the Great Barrier Reef?*
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the world's largest coral reef, boasting an area of approximately 340,000 square kilometers.
The Great Barrier Reef is home to around 400 coral species, as well as around 1,500 other species of living creatures, creating diversity in the ocean.
However, in recent years, the rich ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef has been threatened by widespread coral bleaching caused partly by rising sea temperatures, such as the global coral bleaching events of 1998 and 2010 due to the El Niño phenomenon.

The connection between corals and marine life
Coral reefs are full of diversity.
It is said that about a quarter of the 500,000 animal species found in the ocean through out the world live in coral reefs, and some fish species found in the open ocean also use coral reefs to spawn and raise their young.
The weakening or death of corals has a major impact on the survival of many wildlife species that depend on oceans with coral reefs for their survival, including fish, sea turtles, and waterfowl.
Protecting coral reefs from bleaching also protects connections between oceans.
