[Jpn/Eng]絵本出版プロジェクトを大きな文脈の中で

言語復興の港の山田真寛です。若い人が琉球語を話すようになってきています！ということを動画で紹介します。今回は少し絵本からはなれて、私たち言語復興の港が行っている取り組みを紹介します（全体がつながって絵本に戻って来ます）。

We would like to let you know that there are young people who have started speaking in one of the Ryukyuan Languages. In this article we will explain our project from a broader perspective (we'll come back to this picture book project in the end).

11月に国際シンポジウムで発表したときの（別撮り）映像ですが、お話の内容がとっても素敵だったので、テキストだけでも読んでいただきたいと思い、お二人の写真と合わせて日本語で編集した読み物もつくりました。

言語復興の港のウェブページで、もう少し丁寧に説明しています（卓也さん・ゆり香さんのお話を編集した読み物の続きです）。

琉球諸語は、日常的に使っている人は60歳以上で、子どもたちは話すことも聞いて理解することもほとんどできず、「いま何もしなければ」なくなってしまう消滅危機言語です。しかし、この間の世代の人たちの多くが、しまのことばを聞いて理解できることは、長い間注目されていませんでした。

Generally speaking, people in their 60s or above speak Ryukyuan languages on a daily bases but the children do not speak nor understand it. However, there are many people between these two generations who actually perfectly understand their local language. This has been overlooked for a long time.

 

 

彼らは頭の中に、子どものときに聞いていたしまのことばの言語知識を持っていて、話す練習をすれば（再び）しまのことばを話すことができる「潜在話者」と呼ぶことができます。彼らの多くは、言語獲得期にある子どもを育てている「親の世代」なので、彼らの言語使用が増えれば、それを聞いて育つ子どもたちは学校で使われる共通語としまのことばの（少なくとも受動的）バイリンガルになると考えられます。

They have a knowledge of the local language in their head, just need to practice speaking it. In this sence, we can call them "potential speakers" in a context of language revitalization. Moreover, many of them are raising children who are acquiring their native language. Thus, if we can increase those potential speakers' local language use, we can increase their children's exposure to the local language. In this way the children are likely to become (at least passive) bilingual with Standard Japanese and the local language.

 

 

そんな「潜在話者」がしまのことばを（再び）使うようになるにはどうすればいいか？という観点から、私たちはさまざまなプロジェクトを島の人たちと一緒に進めています。今回制作する絵本も、家庭や地域内で子どもたちに読んであげるための絵本（しかも詳しい解説付き）があれば、潜在話者の言語使用が増えるのでは、と考えての取り組みです。

How can we increas the local language use of those "potential speakers"? We are carring out many language revitalization projects with the language community members from this point of view. The current project is one of them: we believe that the potential speakers would practice reading the picture books in order to read them for the children.
