日本経済新聞で当館所蔵のミティラー画が紹介されました。

先日（8月20日）、日本経済新聞文「アジアの大衆芸術十選」というコラムの中でミティラー画についての記事が掲載されました。

紹介されている作品は当館所蔵のボーワ・デーヴィーさんによる「太陽神スーリヤ」（162×366.2cm）という大作です。

Hindu Monks, are offering holy water. This cheerful rustic picture is called Mithila Painting.

In Mithila, north eastern region of state of Bihar, India housewives make a painting on mud wall of their houses as ritual practice and also for events of celebration. Usually the theme is taken from mythological stories or religious figures. This practice continued as tradition from mother to daughter.

Since Bihar was the poorest state, Government encouraged women to paint on papers so that they can get some cash income. Those paintings started earning a worldwide popularity.
The person who made this painting is Ms. Bowa Devi.
She was invited to Paris for the Exhibition titled “Magicians of the Earth” and she got a huge appreciation there.

Mr. Tokio Hasegawa who was a member of Avant Garde musicians and travelled abroad was attracted to Mithila Painting. He founded a Mithila Museum in mountain area where snow
falls heavily. He has a collection of Mithila paintings in the museum.
