Interview with a woman from Burkina Faso

 

I had an interview with Mrs. Adia Silga, a woman who is from Burkina Faso and lives in the U.S.

ブルキナファソ出身、アメリカ在住のAdia Silgaさんにインタビューしました。

 

Saito: I hear you’re very hardworking and busy. Thank you very much for your precious time!
I hear you are from Burkina Faso, and how long did you live there? Also, please tell me what made you move to the U.S if possible.

 

齋藤：Adiaさんは大変勤勉でお忙しいと伺っていますが、貴重なお時間ありがとうございます！
ブルキナファソ出身と伺いましたが、現地には何歳までいらっしゃったのですか？また、アメリカに移住したきっかけについて、差し支えなければ教えてください。

 

Mrs. Silga: My pleasure! I graduated from a high school in Burkina Faso, and I moved to the U.S at the age of 19 to enter a university.

 

Silgaさん：いえいえ！私はブルキナファソで高校まで卒業し、19歳の時に大学進学のためにアメリカに移りました。

 

Saito: You moved to the U.S for the university! Did you find any difficulties as a student from Burkina Faso?

 

齋藤：アメリカ移住は大学進学のためだったんですね！ブルキナファソ出身であることで苦労したことはありましたか？

 

Mrs. Silga: The main problems were the language barrier and the school fee. My sister who is 12 years older than me lived in the U.S at that time and she helped me a lot including the school fee.

 

Silgaさん：特に言葉に苦労しましたし学費もかかりました。12歳年上の姉が当時アメリカに移住していて、学費をはじめ色々助けてもらいました。

Saito: Your sister was in the U.S too! How about other siblings?

 

齋藤：お姉さんもアメリカにいらっしゃったんですね！他のご兄弟は？

 

Mrs. Silga: We have 15 siblings in my family including myself, and my sister and I graduated from university, but for others, some of them could not continue their studies. In Burkina Faso, most parents cannot afford all children’s education. In our family, those who really wanted to go to school were allowed to but those who did not get good grades at school were not. I was lucky that I was the one that was funded.

 

Silgaさん：私の家族には私を含め15人の兄弟がいて、姉と私が大学を卒業しましたが、他の兄弟については勉強を続けられなかった人もいます。ブルキナファソでは子供全員の教育費は出せない親が多いです。うちの家庭では、本当に学校に行きたい子だけ行かせてもらい、あまり成績が良くない子は行けませんでした。私は学費をかけてもらえてラッキーでした。

 

Saito: What do you and your sister do?

 

齋藤：Adiaさんとお姉さんはお仕事は何をされているんですか？

 

Mrs. Silga: I work for a bank and help agencies to start jobs. My sister worked for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and worked at an embassy for five years in the U.S, and she’s gone back to Burkina Faso.

 

Silgaさん：私は銀行に勤めていて、代理店が仕事を始めるサポートをしています。姉は国際連合アメリカ合衆国政府代表部に勤め5年間アメリカの大使館で働いていましたが、今はブルキナファソに戻っています。

 

 

Saito: Such excellent sisters! It’s understandable your father prioritized you two for education.
What do you think of gender equality for education in Burkina Faso in general? For example, if a family in Burkina Faso has a girl and a boy and they have to choose one to go to school?

 

齋藤：優秀な姉妹ですね！お父さんも学費を出したいと思った理由も分かります。
ブルキナファソの教育に関する一般的なジェンダーの平等性についてはどう思いますか？たとえば、ブルキナファソのある家庭で男の子と女の子がいて、片方だけ学校に行けるとしたら？

 

Mrs. Silga: They’re gonna choose the boy. I was really licky. I don’t know but my father never differentiated, but everybody else that I know, they’re going to put the boy in school first.
Even if the boys know nothing at school, even if they waste their money, even if the girls are better students, they still choose the boys.
Women in Burkina Faso are trying their best to improve the situation but many people still believe it’s normal to prioritize boys.

 

Silgaさん：男の子を選びます。私は本当にラッキーで、なんでか分からないけど父は全く区別しなかったのですが、私が知ってる限りで言えば、他の人はみんな男の子をまず学校に入れます。たとえ男の子が学校の勉強を何も分かってなくても、お金の無駄遣いだったとしても、女の子の方が成績優秀だったとしても。
ブルキナファソの女性たちもこの状況を改善しようと動いているものの、やはり男の子を優先させることは当然と多くの人に思われています。

 

Saito: There’s such a strong notion. Now I understand that the girls are deprived of their chances because of social and economical problems but girls in Burkina Faso can also succeed once they have a chance.
Please could you give your message to the supporters of crowdfunding?

 

齋藤：根強い考えがあるんですね。社会的、経済的な問題で女の子のチャンスが後回しにされているものの、チャンスさえあればブルキナファソで生まれた女性も活躍できることが伝わってきました。
最後に、クラウドファンディングのサポーターの皆さんにメッセージをお願いします。

 

Mrs. Silga: Don’t hesitate and help. Every day I’m grateful for the position that I’m in right now, but people like me who really wanted to do better for themselves as for the education didn’t get the chance that I got. So I would say to the supporters not to hesitate. If they can help, it’s a great project and it’s gonna help a lot of people.
The project page says 200 dollars (≒20,000 yen) will be a 1-year educational fee for one student, and it helps a lot for their student life.

 

Silgaさん：ためらわず応援してください。私は毎日今の自分の立場に感謝していますが、私のように教育について自分のためにもっと頑張りたいと思っていた人たちが、私が手に入れたようなチャンスを得ることができませんでした。なのでサポーターに伝えたいのは、躊躇せずサポートすることができれば、これは素晴らしいプロジェクトであり、多くの人々を助けられるということです。
プロジェクトページに2万円で生徒の学費が1年補助できるとあるように、2万円もあれば生徒の学校生活の大きな助けとなります。
