【Restoration and Conservation

of the Nagaya-Mon Gate With the Thatched-Roof

Loved by Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach

-Let's hand down the Nagaya-mon Gate loved by Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach and pass on the messages conveyed by this building to future generations!-

 

At the entrance of Hamada-Gama kiln, which celebrated the 90th memorial year since the first clay firing in the kiln, there is the Nagaya-mon Gate with the thatched-roof. This is the building that Shoji Hamada loved. 

 

We, the project team members, reorganized the internal part of the building several years ago, and confirmed that this building was transferred to Mashiko to welcome Bernard Leach and used as his workshop and his own room when he stayed in the town in 1934.At the same time, it became evident that the damage on the roof and underfloor progressed, suggesting the need to cover tremendous costs to restore the building.

 

 

This building is known as a sacred place for the Mingei (national-art) Movement that Shoji and Leach loved and is historically meaningful.

Thus, we decided to launch a crowdfunding project by using READY FOR (a popular crowdfunding system in Japan). The target goal is [8 million yen] to cover the repair cost, and we would like to ask our supporters for donations.
 

 

 

We truly hope this activity will lead to passing on this beautiful scenery of Mashiko with this thatched-roof building that harmonizes with the great Satoyama forest (located near a human community). 

 

In this project, we formed a joint team by collaborating with highly motivated graduate students who specialize in historical buildings from Tsukuba University.
