My name is Eishun Kato, the chief priest of Jokiin temple, Koyasan. I humbly pray for all of you the best health and spirit.  Here, I sincerely appreciate holding the opportunity to communicate with you all.

 

I would like to announce the launch of a crowdfunding project for the restoration of cultural property of Jokiin, Azekura. Azekura is a style of Japanese traditional architecture used as a storehouse.

 

 
Jokiin was originally founded in the middle of the 12th century (the late Heian period) by Priest Jichie, one of the ten senior disciples of Kobo Daishi Kukai. Thereafter, Priest Shinkaku, another prominent figure, devoted his life to the rise of the temple. Due to the contribution of predecessors, Jokiin has been maintaining virtuous activities for 900 years.

 

Jokiin is located in the central part of Koyasan, close to Kongobuji head temple.  On the ground of Jokiin, there is a storehouse, called Azekura, in which we preserve Buddhist sutras. The storehouse is constructed in the traditional style referred to as Azekura-tsukuri and is painted with red iron oxide, Bengara.  The storehouse was built at the beginning of the 17th century (early Edo period).  The original building was a part of the worship complex, called Toshogu located behind Kongobuji head temple, for the memorial of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate government. An assembly of historic hand-written copies of sutras, Kiyohirakyo, had been kept in the storehouse until the storehouse was moved. Kiyohirakyo was designated a national treasure later on.

 

In 1899 (Meiji 32nd, Kyozo was brought over to the present location of Jokiin by Jutaro Matsumoto, Japan’s prominent businessman in the early Meiji period, and was used to install the memorial tablets of his family.

 

Today, the storehouse, Azekura, has become a distinguished feature in the solemn scenery of Koyasan. Especially in the season of autumn colors, Azekura with illumination adds highlights to the view of the Jabaramichi in Danjo Garan.

 

However, the building of Azekura got damaged, having been through hundreds of summers and winters. We have decided to restore it.

 

Jokiin is going to have a major restoration project for Azekura, to preserve a Buddhist heritage in the future. I deeply appreciate that the project is hold with the support and guidance from the cultural assets center of Wakayama prefecture.
