Thank you for visiting our page. My name is Taro Murasaki, and I am the representative of the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN. The NIKKO SARUGUNDAN is a theme park where you can "see" and enjoy performances and shows, "play" with monkeys at various attractions, and "touch" with baby monkeys to feel the beauty and cuteness of monkeys.

 

Originally, it was difficult to touch monkeys, but now we aim to create a facility where we can deepen our experience and knowledge of monkeys, such as touch monkeys and participatory attractions with professional trainers. In addition, we take into account the living space and playground of monkeys in the facility, and strive every day to make it the best paradise not only for our customers but also for our monkeys. 

 

 With the aim of continuing and inheriting traditional Japanese performing arts, we have held events which are suitable for each season, such as the cultivation of our entertainers and monkeys, and appeared in various media. Currently, there are about 30 entertainers and staffs, and about 80 performing monkeys and monkeys we protected.

 

 

Crowdfunding from May 18th to June 30th, 2020 “COVID-19 Emergency Support: Protecting Monkeys and Entertainers and Surviving the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN” received support from many people.

With a lot of support and warm messages for monkeys and words of support for the staff, We felt that we could not stop the monkey performance, which is a more traditional entertainment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you very much.

 

Due to the COVID-19, all events such as the sales of the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN and street performances in various parts of Japan had to be canceled. The amount of the loss in the two months was 50 million yen. It was a crowdfunding for cost of monkey food and facility maintenance. 

 

For this reason, most of the money we received was spent on monkey food, breeding management and medical expenses. In addition, air conditioners in monkey houses where performing monkeys live have been replaced with new ones so that they can live more comfortably, and playground equipment for monkeys in monkey mountains has been added.

 Thank you for your warm support even after achieving my goal, I was able to create houses for monkeys, which has been in urgent need. As a result of continuing conservation efforts under the situation of COVID-19, more than 80 monkeys are now raised in the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN. The number of breeding huts and land in this facility are limited, but we will try to improve the breeding environment so that monkeys can feel more comfortable.

 

We were able to reopen the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN Theater and perform in street performances in various parts of the country little by little. All the staffs will do their best to bring smiles to everyone and repay you! Thank you very much for your warm support.

 

 

 

【What we can do with your support this time】

 

Although you have helped us a lot, the long-term impact of the spread of COVID-19 has given us more damage than we expected. From April 2020 to March 2021, 168 business days were reduced, and about half of the year was restricted. 

In addition, the number of days the facility itself was closed was 125 days. Compared to the same period before COVID-19, it is concerned that the number of customers and income will decrease by more than 70% and that the business won’t even continue. We can't say that the COVID-19 will end in the future, and we don't know when it will happen again.

 

 

 However, we, the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN, cannot fall.

 

It’s a traditional 1,000-year-old monkey performance. Actually, history stopped in the 1950s. About 40 years ago, then 17-year-old Taro Murasaki revived the monkey performance as the first modern monkey performance. In order not to end the reconnected history, we decided to overcome this predicament with new challenges rather than wait for the end of COVID-19.

 

Next summer, the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN will undergo a major renovation into an unprecedented theme park!

 

We found that "making it possible for our customers to touch monkeys and also to play with them", which we had never done before, was an irreplaceable experience for our customers. I’ve always wanted to make a facility where I can provide more new experiences that doesn’t exist anywhere else.

In recent years, we had planned to renovate the ideal facility, but what we faced was COVID-19. As I mentioned above, the COVID-19 recession has been prolonged longer than we thought, and this year, following last year, has continued to be difficult to manage. 

“Should we do it now?” All the staff discussed it many times. However, it was the customer who encouraged us.

When I came to NIKKO SARUGUNDAN and heard customers saying, "It was fun to touch monkeys," and "I was saved when I was suffering from the COVID-19 disaster," We realized that we should do it now.

 

What we can do is to deliver entertainment through animals, and to communicate the warmth and preciousness of life through time with monkeys. We think we can make everyone who comes to NIKKO SARUGUNDAN smile.

Therefore, we decided to carry out crowdfunding for the second time. We would like you to support the half of the capital investment costs of the facilities that will be the main feature of this renewal.

 

 
The first one is a new facility for monkeys. 

Monkeys who had been performing tricks up until now spend their time in a breeding facility behind the theater. There is no problem raising monkeys in the current facility, but many monkeys who were active on the front stage every day love to appear in front of customers, so spending time in the backyard itself should not be stressful, so we sometimes have to take them for a walk in the area for customers.

Therefore, we are not fully satisfied with the current facilities. We have always wanted the monkeys who contributed to the performances to spend the rest of their lives in a better breeding environment, so We are thinking about renting a place next to the NIKKO SARUGUNDAN and building a new monkey breeding facility as a new area.

There are many people saying, “I want to see the lives of monkeys after their retirement!” and “I want to see monkeys as well as performance monkey”, at the new facility, we will make it a facility where customers and monkey can meet directly!
 
①New Monkey House + Playground Establishment
The new breeding facilities will also have rooms and a playground which is directly connected to the monkey house. It makes it easier for monkeys to support their health. It will also enable us to accept more monkeys than ever before. 

 

②New baby monkey house

Currently, baby houses are limited to newborn monkeys who can interact with customers. When they become a one-year-old child, you can't come in and touch each other for safety reasons. I would like to create a facility where I can drink tea slowly while watching baby monkeys from outside, which we used to do live streaming on YouTube.

 

 

③New Monkeys and Ziplines

We will create a facility where you can take pictures of monkey sliding on a zipline, which have never existed anywhere in the world. We will make it a safety-oriented facility so that many children and adults can enjoy it. We would like you to enjoy the experience with monkeys, which will be a lifelong memory that you can't experience anywhere else.

We will make it a facility where you can not only touch penguins, capibara, horses, dogs, guinea pigs, goats, and more, but also for more various experiences. 

What we are thinking of is letting customers experience to feed the animals, walk dogs, and ride on horseback! You can fully enjoy the extraordinary feeling, which we are sure that many customers can enjoy and the satisfying experience caused by the cuteness of animals.

Of course, We are thinking about collaborating with monkeys and various animals!
