懇願

 

世界は危機の時代に入っているようである。これは、資源の制約と不変で遺伝的に適応性があり、競争力のある人間性のために長い間予測されてきた。

 

2011年からの私の対策は、私自身の個人消費を徐々に削減して、エネルギー集約型の都市生活から離れ、地元の地域に向けた、より持続可能な生活を育成することであった。ところで、この選択も遺伝的にも適応性があると思う。即ち、この選択は、個人が遺産を残す可能性を高める。

 

地球保護へのこの保守的なアプローチはすべての人に相応しいとは思わないが、私はその味方としてすこし主張したいと思う。なぜなら、日本の政府はこれを阻止するように決定したようだから。

 

福島、チェルノブイリ、スリーマイルアイランドからの教訓は、私たちが子孫に住む価値のある世界を残したいのであれば、化石燃料の乱用を必要としている高エネルギー使用、そして、その結果で問題が表れると、再生可能エネルギーでは達成できない、ベースロード需要を満たすため再び「核ルネッサンス」へ進む現代的な傾向を考え直す必要がある。

 

特に、世界中の政府はAIの推進に熱心である。それに必要となる驚異的な電力を提供するために、安全性と豊かさの約束を果たせなかった歴史を完全に無視して、原子力エネルギーを復活させ、拡大するように提案している。（ところで、テキサス州では、膨大な量の冷却水もAIには必要であるため、住民はより短いシャワーで浴びることさえ勧められていると聞いた。）機械は人よりも優先されている。

 

日本政府は、デジタル化を推進するため、2021年にデジタル庁を設立した。彼らが想像しているようにみえる「すばらしい新世界」は、AIと無線技術の両方に依存して、誰もが受動性に楽しまれているようである。無線技術は同様に、従来の有線システムよりもはるかにエネルギー集約的だと知られている。

Appeal

 

The world seems to be entering a time of crisis. This has been long predicted due to resource constraints and immutable, genetically adaptive, competitive human nature.

 

My response since 2011 has been to cut back gradually on my own personal consumption, move away from an energy-intensive urban lifestyle, and cultivate a more sustainable lifestyle oriented towards community and the land. This choice, by the way, is also genetically adaptive, I think, i.e., making it more likely for the individual to leave a legacy.

 

While this conservative approach to conservation is not for everyone, I want to argue for a moment in its favor, because Japan’s government seems determined to discourage it. What Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have taught us is that if we want to leave a world worth inhabiting to our descendants, we must rethink the modern trend toward higher energy use that has necessitated rampant use of fossil fuels, and as that results in problems, another “nuclear renaissance” to handle baseload demand, which renewable energy cannot accomplish.

 

In particular, governments around the globe are keen on promoting AI, and to provide the prodigious power that requires, they propose to revive and expand nuclear energy, totally ignoring its history of failed promises of safety and abundance. (In Texas, I hear people are even being told to take shorter showers, because AI requires enormous amounts of cooling water too.) Machines are being given precedence over people.

 

Japan’s government established a Digital Agency in 2021 to promote digitalization. The “Brave New World” they seem to envision, with everyone being entertained into passivity, will rely on both AI and wireless technology. The latter is likewise known to be far more energy-intensive than traditional wired systems.

 

Which leaves me wondering, why did I give up air conditioning after Fukushima? I’m sure I am not the only person in Japan who did.
