Help me deal in additive-free and Amami pure brown sugar chiffon cakes at the Farmers Market, LA
My name is Minori Oota, a Japanese food coordinator living in Amami Oshima, Japan.
I have been serving “additive-free cake” contained pure brown sugar which is a specialty product from Amami Oshima, homemade dishes and sweets to the local people at local community events. Now I’m planning to sell handmade chiffon cakes contained pure brown sugar which is a specialty product from Amami Oshima at the Farmers Market, LA. The project closely connects to the problems of poverty and obesity for the United States of America. There is no choice for the people suffering from poverty to live on a diet low in nutrients containing more food additive. I therefore communicate the importance of diet through the safe and affordable chiffon cake to everyone and must develop and offer the continuable food life to raise awareness about food education.
With that, the campaign required me 2,000,000 JPY as the preparation expense including the cost of passage to LA, permits and licenses from the local government and etc. I would like to ask for your assistance and cooperation to achieve my dream: appealing the importance of diet both at home and abroad.
I have learned the importance of diet from the food life during the child rearing period.
It’s been for 18 years since I moved to Amami Oshima. My husband and I opened a scuba diving shop and I’ve been serving homemade dishes and sweets to our guests. My dishes won popularity amongst not only the guests coming for scuba diving but also the local people. In addition, enjoying my dishes and our scuba diving tour have been accepted as one of event of Amami Oshima sightseeing tour. My passion for food drove me to perform various activities centered on food.
I am always careful about eating. However, I’d been too busy to pay attention to what I eat during the child-rearing period due to balancing motherhood and a career. Having foods high in fat and sugar affected my child directly through breast milk, with pimply skin and also she brought up milk after feeding when I had fat-rich foods one day.
I had an experience that the improvement of my food life contributed to my child recovered quickly from the condition with pimply skin and vomiting. Having had renewed sense of the importance of diet served as a trigger, I started campaign to spread not only recipes but also additive-free recipes. I was given the engineering position to study processing of agricultural products as a temporary staff at “Setouchi-cho” town office. Worked there as the sixth industry advisor till this April. I’ve been promoting various food-related activities based on those experiences.
We will see “additive-free and pure brown sugar chiffon cakes” contained Amami Oshima-grown pure brown sugar to Los Angeles where is the birthplace of the chiffon cake.
“Additive-free pure brown sugar chiffon cake” we produce contains simply “brown sugar, eggs, TAIHAKU sesame oil, flour and salt” as it is additive-free.
Pure brown sugar that is a specialty product from Amami Oshima is contained. Brown sugar required more time in its production. Minerals contained in brown sugar is calcium, iron, potassium, VB1, VB2 and many more not found in white sugar.
As for oil, usually commercially available oil contained antioxidants is used for the chiffon cake though, we selected “TAIHAKU sesame oil” that is additive-free for our products. Instead of using baking powder, adding “Amami Oshima natural salt” for better beating egg white served as a raising agent in baking is one of characteristics of the products.
The origin of the name of chiffon cake is “light like chiffon”. Without using any food additives, like our products, you can still enjoy the light and moist cake with richness of brown sugar. The chiffon cake we offer is liked by men and women of all ages.
My goal is to offer additive-free foods to diet in America suffered from poverty and obesity in order to convey the importance of diet!
Avoiding foods with food additives as much as possible is my concern for my children. One day I discussed with my friend living in LA on the current status of diet in USA, food additives and food education over a cup of coffee and a piece of chiffon cake:
In the USA, there is a close connection between poverty and obesity and the people suffering from poverty has no choice to live on cheaper fast foods and diet low in nutrients containing more additives. Many people barely enjoy their own homemade cooking so that they have little memory of the taste of home cooking when they grow up. I had a chance to see what I heard actually and was given more information about it when I went to LA.
Based upon knowing about the current condition of the USA, we came up with the idea first that provide additive-free foods for the people and second one is to provide the foods at an affordable price.
Now developing the low-calorie and safe chiffon cake at an affordable price for the American market is underway.
We have a sense of crisis about the situation that the population of the people suffering from child obesity or adult diseases is getting increased in Japan due to the alteration in dietary habits from Japanese-style food to Western, or the simplification of cooking style.
To make much wider audience aware of the importance of diet through our campaign winning popularity of the chiffon cake among the LA market where is the birthplace of the cake allows us to draw a high degree of attention for the product from home market. For the future, we will intent to sell “the additive-free pure brown sugar chiffon cake” mainly in LA and home market. Based on that, we will promote a new product development and enhancement of the awareness of food.

We strongly desire to spread the awareness of food education both at home and abroad. Increasing awareness of health for several years has led people to pay more attention to food materials and additives. Containing more additives in modern foods results in the increase of health problems: infertility, women’s diseases, allergies, and so on. An excessive intake of salt increases the rate of adult diseases such as heart attack, stroke, or a circulatory disorder in the real world.
I think that telling the importance of diet and thankful for food to the children with bright future make them think what they should eat for their health. Furthermore, they may feel in pleasure in cooking for themselves or for their family. Having fun with cooking can offer them food life in good way for their health in the future.
We produce “the additive-free brown sugar chiffon cake” contained Amami Oshima-grown pure brown sugar and deal in the products to the Los Angeles Farmers Market.
Carrying out this project can reduce medical cost contributing to the prevention of diseases and the reduction of the people suffering from health problems. We believe that we can produce wonderful results for the whole country and the people through the food.
Promoting awareness campaign of food education and developing and offering continuable food life are needed. With that, 2,000,000JPY is required for the cost of passage to LA, permits and licenses from the local government and etc. My dream is to convey the importance of diet both at home and abroad.
