INTRODUCTION

 

The 5th Floor is an alternative space in Tokyo, whose focus is “curation.” As a curatorial space, we invite curators both from domestic and overseas to do an experimental project which would be difficult in institutional settings. We also run various projects including educational programs, workshops, curator-in-residence along with exhibitions. 

Our mission with those projects is to face the challenges in Japan such as a shortage of opportunities for emerging, in particular independent curators and limited access to curatorial education. There is also a lack of exchange between global and Japanese art scenes.

The 5th Floor aims to establish a curatorial scene in Tokyo outside institutions as well as to enhance the value of curation itself so that emerging curators can accumulate their experiences. We also have endeavored to make a connection between overseas and domestic art scenes especially through a young perspective.

However, it is difficult to make a profit with projects that are artist/curator oriented, and thus we have decided to run this crowd-funding project to get funding for further development of our projects to contribute to the Japanese art scene. 

PROFILE

 

The 5th Floor is an alternative space that opened in February 2020 in Tokyo. They present ambitious curatorial-driven programs with the unique spaces of the three homogeneous but different rooms, and the balcony on the 5th floor of a former dormitory of a local company. They also support emerging artists and curators through Curator in Residence programs that invite curators both domestic and overseas, workshops with international curators and art workers, and educational programs along with self- or guest-curated exhibitions.
