チェルシーの保護と未来：Chelsea's rescue and her life ahead

NFSのに保護されてきたサバ柄の母猫、チェルシー。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　彼女は長いあいだ、ナイロビの住宅地で野良猫として生きてきました。繰り返す妊娠、出産と子育て——その過酷な年月を、誰にも頼らず、ただ自分の力だけで生き抜いてきた猫です。　　　　　　　　　

長い間野良ネコとして妊娠と出産を繰り返してきたチェルシー

生まれてくる子猫たちはふわふわで愛らしく、その可愛さから、住宅地の住民たちは子猫だけを取り上げていきました。けれど、母猫のチェルシーに手を差し伸べる人は誰もいませんでした。ごはんももらえず、チェルシーはごみ袋をあさり、ネズミを捕まえて空腹をしのぎながら、命をつないでいました。

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　チェルシーの子猫、ふわふわした長毛の子猫はケニアでは人気。このような子猫を野良猫から取り上げで売る住民もいる。

そんな彼女は子猫たちと一緒に猫風邪にかかり、弱っているところを心配した方がNFSに連絡をくれました。スタッフがすぐに現場に向かい、母子ともども保護することができました。

今、チェルシーはシェルターで静かに療養中。猫風邪もようやく落ち着き、避妊手術を受ける準備をしています。

チェルシーは、相当年をとった猫であるとレイチェルさんは言います。もう、これからは妊娠や子育てに追われることなく、穏やかな猫人生を過ごすことができます。

一緒に保護された子猫たちは、元気になれば里親がみつかることでしょう。チェルシーも、やっと安心して過ごせる場所を手に入れました。

ナイロビでこうして助けられる猫は、実はほんのひと握りです。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　生まれたばかりの子猫がごみ袋に入れて遺棄されたり、「猫よけ」として毒物が置かれたり…。ケニアには動物保護法があるにもかかわらず、こうした行為が繰り返されています。

目の炎症をもって保護されてくる子猫は多いのですが、適切な処置されるとすぐに良くなります。でもほっておくと失明につながることも。子猫たちに目薬をさすのはレイチェルさんとエノックさんに日課です。

At the NFS shelter, there’s a quiet, resilient tabby cat named Chelsea.

For years, Chelsea lived as a stray in a Nairobi neighborhood, enduring the harsh realities of street life. She went through pregnancy after pregnancy, raising litter after litter—all on her own.

Chelsea has been pregnents years and years on the street. 

Her kittens were always irresistibly fluffy and cute. People would take them from her, but no one helped her on food or anything. Chelsea was herself, no food, no shelter. Just survival.

To stay alive, she scavenged through trash and hunted mice. Life was unforgiving for her. 

People in Kenya love fluffy kittens, like Chelsea's kittens. In some cases, people sell kittens of stray mothers to make money.  

Not long ago, Chelsea and her latest litter fell sick with cat flu. Weak and struggling, she finally caught the attention of a kind stranger who contacted NFS whose team responded right away and brought her and kittens to safety.

Chelsea is now recovering. Her symptoms are improving, and she’ll soon be spayed—ending the exhausting cycle of constant motherhood.

Her kittens will be adopted into loving homes. And Chelsea? For the first time in her life, she has a safe, quiet place to rest. No more hunger. No more fear.

But Chelsea’s story is the exception, not common cases.

Kittens are still being thrown out with the trash in Nairobi. Some cats are deliberately poisoned just for being in the wrong place. Animal cruelty is illegal in the country, but enforcement is rare, and consequences are almost nonexistent.

Chelsea is one of the lucky few.

Thanks to compassionate people and the team at NFS, her life is changing. She’s still getting used to living indoors—it’s all new to her—but she’s finally safe. And for the first time, her future looks bright.

Many rescued kittens come with eye infections. When eyes were treated, they will heal soon but if no treatement was given, kittens may lose their eye sites. Giving eye drops are the daily choir of Rachel and Enock. 

At NFS, Rachel and her staff believe every cat deserves that same chance. A life with food, shelter, safety—and someone who cares.
