明日4/6（土曜日）は岩出山城山公園にて「SLシゴハチ復興祈願祭」が開催されますが、ぜひ御家族連れでお越しくださいませ♪

 

そんなSL保存地域である大崎市岩出山で、SL保存運動の最中であった2022年、地元中学生による英語論文大会にて蒸気機関車をテーマとした生徒さんの作品が最優秀賞となりました。今回はそちらをご紹介させて頂こうと思います。

 

 

【英語原文】

Title:The SL Shigohachi-san

"I don't believe that Shigohachi-san should be dismantled."Everyone, have you ever been to Shiroyama Park? There is a big statue of Date Masamune and the amazing steam　locomotive "Shigohachi-san" in the park. Sadly, Osaki city management has decided to remove the SL Shigohachi-san because it costs a lot of money to preserve it. I was very sad when I learned about this news. But there are still so many people who want to keep it as a historic symbol of Iwadeyama. There is even a group of people who are taking action to preserve it.In my school, we read newspapers once a week. When we read about this news, we discussed whether to preserve or dismantle the Shigohachi-san, in our moral education class. 63 percent of the students wanted to preserve it. They said, "We have so many memories with shigohachi-san. It is useful to study and know about the history." Only 9 percent of them said,"We should dismantle shigohachi-san. It is dangerous because it's broken, and it is also costly to preserve it. We should spend this money preparing for natural disasters." 28 percent of students said, "We don't know what should be done. Whatever we do, it costs a lot of money. The history of shigohachi-san is important, but who will manage it?" At first, I was one of those 63 percent of students. But I couldn't come up with a better opinion. How about you? Which opinion do you agree with? While we were having this discussion, I remembered a field trip we went on to Minamisanriku, where people have preserved the remains of a disaster prevention agency building as a reminder of the great earthquake of 2011. Many people died in the tsunami there,so it was a sad place. But now, people often gather around the building. The Sansan street near the building is always lively and people plant beautiful flowers there that make the place look really charming. I think we must keep these historic symbols safe. So, how about the shigohachi-san steam locomotive of Iwadeyama? People say, "Shigohachi-san is not just iron,it's a treasure. It ran through the fires of war in the Showa period." But how many people in Iwadeyama are interested in preserving it?If you stop looking after something, not only Shigohachi-san, it will get worse and become dirty. It is very important for us to take action if we think it is rusting or getting dangerous.

We mustn't wait for someone else to do it. We can make this community safer and more

beautiful. When Shigohachi-san was brought to Iwadeyama about 50 years ago, a special song was written in honor of Shigohachi-san. Here are the words. "Welcome to Iwadeyama of history and dreams. Shigohachi-san, thanks for your hard work. Take a good rest here." Now,

I'm going to be a story teller, and sing of Shigohachi-san to the future generations of

Iwadeyama. This would be my part as a citizen.

では, 岩出山の機関車シゴハチさんはどうでしょうか? 人々は言います。

「シゴハチさんは、 ただの鉄のかたまりではない。 昭和時代の戦火を駆け抜けた宝です。」

しかし,岩出山の人々が どれだけ保存に興味があるのでしょうか?シゴハチさんに限らず、もし手を加えるのをやめれば,それは, ダメになり、 汚くなるでしょう。 私達にとって重要なことは、汚くて危険と思うならば, 行動を起こすことです。

誰かがしてくれることを待つべきではありません。 私達の行動がこの地域を魅力的にするかもしれません。 約50年前, シゴハチさんが岩出山にやってきた時, 1曲の特別な歌が作られました。 その歌詞の一部を紹介します。 

「歴史と夢の岩出山にようこそ。 ご苦労さん、ゆっくり休んでシゴハチさん。」 

今私は,シゴハチさんとこの歌を未来に届ける語り部になりたいです。 

これが市民としてのわたしの役割だから。

 

 

 

これからの郷土を築いていく子供たちが英語論文にてこのような気持ちを表現して頂いたことは、蒸気機関車保存活動をするメンバー一同大変嬉しく感じたものでした。

今後も子供たちにも「守りたいSL」と思って貰えるように整備活動だけではなく語り部活動にも力を入れて参りたいと思います。
