Hello,
We are the Hachiman Nada Shrine committee located in Nada, Kitsuki city, Oita, Japan.

 

We would like to ask for your support in raising funds to restore the Torii gate of Hachiman Nada Shrine on Iki island, which was washed out by a big typhoon on September 6, 2020. (Torii gate is a sacred gate in the Shinto religion in Japan)

 

 

The symbolic Torii gate on the rock is a very special gate for us as well as our local community. It’s loss is a tragedy for the local people who always come and pray as part of their daily routine just as their ancestors have done for decades before them. Because the Torii is so photogenic and symbolic, it is not only enjoyed by locals but also by many photographers and visitors who come here to see or take pictures of the sunrise over the Torii gate.

 

On the day of the typhoon, the wind was gusting at almost 80mph. Big waves hit the Torii gate and washed it out. Fortunately, the local people found the Torii gate stuck in the river nearby Nada Shrine the next day. People are saying that the Torii gate saved the community by sacrificing herself as the Torii gate and shrine suffered the majority of the damage from the storm.

 

We are a small community in an unpopulated area and we can’t afford to restore the Torii gate on our own. In Japan, the decreasing population of rural areas is a big issue and it is becoming more and more difficult to maintain local shrines and temples. We decided to ask our friends, family and the greater global community through crowdfunding to help us raise the money needed to restore this symbolic Torii gate and shrine.

With your help, we would like to restore the Torii gate as well as the stone walls in the shrine which were also damaged from the typhoon. And eventually, we will fix the damaged area in the main building of the shrine and the damaged Taiko bridge.

 

 

The estimated cost of these repairs is:
Restore the Torii gate: 500,000 yen
Restore the stone wall: 1,500,000 yen
Restore the main shrine building: 1,500,000 yen Fixing the Taiko bridge: 4,000,000 yen
