Day17　先生として　また大人としての在り方

本日も、大きなご支援をいただき、本当に本当に感謝いたします！

さて、今日の活動報告では、昨夜Mikiと一緒にZoomでお話を伺った、高校でALTとして働かれている先生についてご紹介したいと思います。

M先生（以下、M先生とお呼びします）は、ニュージーランドで特別支援教育にも関わられた経験があり、子どもたちへの熱い想いをお持ちの方です。

 

M先生をご紹介くださったのは、私たちのプロジェクトの参考になるのでは？と親切に繋いでくださった現役の高校の英語教師であり、コーチングコミュニティのお仲間でした。本当に、このご縁に心から感謝しています。

2時間で本当に色んなお話を聞かせていただいたのですが、中でもM先生の言葉で特に印象的だったのが、こちらの一言です。

 

 

「先生というのは、自分の意見を教えるのではなく、たとえ間違った意見であっても否定せず、伝え方を教えてあげるもの。」

 

先生や親は、どうしても子どもたちを指導する立場になり、そこに上下関係が生まれやすくなります。

もちろん、人生経験が豊富だからこそ「教えてあげること」は大切。

でも、子どもたちの意見に対して、善悪を強要するのは違うと改めて考えさせられました。

 

どんな意見を持っても良いし、どんな感情を抱いてもいい。

でも、伝え方を間違えれば、人を傷つけてしまうこともある。
その一言が、相手の心に一生の傷を負わせてしまうことだってある。

 

何気ない一言でも、大きな影響を与えることがありますよね。
特に、SNS上のいじめは深刻化しており、「伝え方を学ぶ」ことは今の時代、とても大切だと感じました。

これは、私たち大人も学び続けるべきことだと思います。

 

 

また、M先生は特別支援教育に関わった経験を通して、こんなことをおっしゃっていました。

 

「子どもたちから忍耐というものを学びました。」

「みんな、学び方が違うだけ。」

 

この言葉には深く共感しました。

子どもたちはみんな、個性やペースが違うだけで、学ぶ力そのものがないわけではない。
どのように学ぶのが合っているのか、その子に合ったアプローチを見つけることが大切なのだと感じました。

 

 

「日本の学校で、何か疑問に思うことはありますか？」

そう質問したところ、M先生はこんなことをおっしゃいました。

 

「高校生の体育の時間、男女で分かれて違うことをするのが不思議。」

 

確かに…！日本では当たり前になっていますが、言われてみると不思議ですね。
こうして海外の視点から見ると、気づかなかった「日本の教育の特徴」が見えてくるのが面白いです。

 

 

 

最後に、「M先生ご自身は、どうやって子どもたちとの関わりを学ばれたのですか？」と質問したところ、こんな答えが返ってきました。

 

「尊敬する先生の授業を積極的に見学しながら学んでいます。」

 

今もなお、学び続け、ブラッシュアップされている姿勢に感銘を受けました。

まさに、「先生としての在り方の鏡」のような方だなと感じました✨

 

M先生、本当に貴重なお時間をありがとうございました！

 

 

💗最後に…

 

クラウドファンディングを通して、こうした素晴らしい方との出会いがあることに、改めて感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

Tonight, I’d like to share about a conversation I had over Zoom with an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) at a high school with Miki last night.

 

M-sensei (as I’ll call him) has experience working in special education in New Zealand and is deeply passionate about supporting children.

 

I was introduced to M-sensei by a kind friend who thought their insights might be helpful for our project. I am truly grateful for this connection.

 

 

💗Words That Impressed me

 

One of M-sensei’s most impressive words was:

 

"A teacher’s role is not to impose their own opinions, nor to judge whether a student’s opinion is right or wrong, but to teach them how to express themselves properly."

 

As teachers and parents, we often take a guiding role, which can create a natural hierarchy.
Of course, sharing knowledge is important, but forcing our sense of right and wrong on children is not the answer.

 

It’s okay to feel any emotion.
However, how we express our thoughts can either build or harm relationships.

A single comment can leave a lifelong scar.

Especially in today's world, where cyberbullying is a serious issue, learning how to express ourselves is more important than ever.

This is something we adults must continue to learn as well.

 

💗Insights from Special Education

 

M-sensei also shared valuable lessons from working in special education:

 

"Children taught me patience."

"Everyone learns in different ways."

 

These words deeply resonated with me.

Each child has their own learning style and pace, but that doesn’t mean they lack the ability to learn.

Finding the right approach for each child is key.

 

💗A Different Perspective on Japanese Education

 

When I asked, "Is there anything about Japanese schools that seems unusual to you?"

M-sensei replied:

 

"I find it strange that high school PE classes are still divided by gender."

 

Something that seems “normal” to us in Japan might be quite unusual from an outside perspective.

Talking with people from different backgrounds helps us see education in a new light.

 

 

Finally, I asked,

💗 "How do you continue learning about working with students?"

 

M-sensei answered:

 

"I actively observe the classes of teachers I respect."

 

I was truly inspired by their commitment to continuous learning.

He is a role model for what it means to be a teacher.✨
