さて、今日は「不登校」についてお話ししたいと思います。

 

実は私自身、「不登校」という言葉に少し違和感を持っています。
以前は「登校拒否」とも言われていましたが、どこか“悪いこと”のように聞こえてしまうからです。

 

学校は、学びや人との出会いの場として理想的な環境ではありますが、
さまざまな理由で「行かない」という選択をすること自体が悪いわけではありません。

 

問題なのは、学校に行かないときに、それを支える仕組みがまだ整っていないという現状です。

 

また、日本では受験文化の影響で「出席日数」が内申に響くため、
親としても不安を抱えやすいのが実情です。

 

 

🌍他の国ではどうでしょう？

 

🔸アメリカ
「不登校」という言葉自体がなく、ホームスクーリングは制度として確立。
約200万人以上が選択しており、「学び方のひとつ」として広く認識されています。

 

🔸ニュージーランド
政府が認可するホームスクーリング制度あり。
「学校に行かないこと＝問題」ではなく、個々に合った学びの形を尊重する文化。
子どもの「ウェルビーイング（心の健康や幸福感）」を大切にしています。

 

🔸スウェーデン
学校教育が義務ですが、不登校の子どもには医療や福祉と連携したサポートあり。

 

🔸ドイツ
ホームスクーリングは禁止。ただし、学校での個別支援がとても手厚いです。

 

🔸カナダ
州によってはホームスクーリングが認可制。教育の多様性が進んでいる国です。

 

 

こうした国々には
「学校に行かない＝学ばない」ではなく、
「学び方はひとつじゃない」という柔軟な価値観があります。

 

各国それぞれに、歴史的背景や文化が異なるため、「これが正解」というものはないと思います。

ただ、日本においては、子どもが学校に行かなくなったときに、それを支える仕組みがまだ十分に整っていないことが、さまざまな問題を生み出していると感じています。

 

たとえば、学校に行かないことで社会とのつながりが極端に減ってしまい、

 

孤独感や自己否定感を抱えやすくなったり、

将来に対して希望を持てなくなってしまう

子どもも少なくありません。

また、学びの継続や進路選択にも不安を感じる家庭が多く、親子ともに大きなプレッシャーや不安を抱える現状があります。

 

こうした課題に対して、どう向き合い、どう解決していくかが、今後の日本社会にとってとても重要なテーマだと考えています。

 

 

私たち『心育』は、
子どもたち一人ひとりが「自分って大丈夫」と思えるような、
心のよりどころとなる“学びの居場所”を広げていきたいと考えています。

今回のクラウドファンディングは、その第一歩です。

Recently, a friend offered to help distribute flyers,
and we’ve also received support from people I haven’t even met in person.
I feel so touched by all the warm encouragement—I’m spending my days feeling deeply grateful♡

 

 

Today, I’d like to talk about "school refusal" in Japan.

To be honest, I personally feel a bit of discomfort with the term “school refusal” (futōkō in Japanese).

It used to be called “school rejection,” which sounds quite negative, as if the child is doing something wrong.

 

Ideally, school is a place for learning, social development, and meeting new people.
But I believe choosing not to go to school for various reasons is not something that should be seen as inherently bad.

 

The real issue is that when a child does not attend school,
the support systems in place are still insufficient to meet their learning and emotional needs.

Additionally, in Japan’s exam-focused culture, attendance records affect a student’s school evaluation,
which understandably causes concern for many parents.

 

 

🌍 So how do other countries approach this?

 

🔸 United States
The term “school refusal” doesn’t really exist. Homeschooling is a well-established, legal system.
More than 2 million children are homeschooled, and it is widely recognized as just one of many valid learning paths.

 

🔸 New Zealand
Homeschooling is also government-approved.
Not attending school isn’t considered a “problem,” as there’s a strong cultural understanding that learning should be tailored to each individual.
Children’s well-being (mental health and happiness) is a top priority.

 

🔸 Sweden
School attendance is compulsory, but when a child stops attending, there are systems in place with support from medical and welfare services.

 

🔸 Germany
Homeschooling is not allowed, but schools provide very thorough individual support.

 

🔸 Canada
In some provinces, homeschooling is permitted with government approval, and there is a strong emphasis on educational diversity.

 

 

In many of these countries, the idea that
“not going to school = not learning” doesn’t exist.

 

Instead, there’s a widely accepted belief that “there’s more than one way to learn.”

Of course, every country has its own unique cultural and historical background,
so there’s no single “correct” answer.

 

However, in Japan, I feel that the lack of support systems for children who stop attending school is creating serious challenges for students and their families.

 

For example, when a child stops going to school, their connection to society can significantly weaken, making them more likely to experience loneliness, self-doubt, and anxiety about their future.

In many cases, families also feel uncertainty about how their child will continue learning or pursue future education,
leading to emotional pressure for both the child and the parents.

 

I strongly believe that how we choose to face and address these challenges
will be a key issue for the future of Japanese society.

 

 

At Cocoiku (心育), our mission is to create learning spaces
where every child can feel “I’m okay just as I am.”

Places where they can feel supported, accepted, and emotionally safe.

 

This crowdfunding campaign is our very first step toward that vision.
