This online fundraising campaign will focus on the restoration of the Sacred Kannon statue in the Tenno Hall of Fukugonji Temple.

With the first goal of 7 million yen (about US$47,000), we aim to restore the Sacred Kannon. After this, we plan on launching four additional fundraising of 5 million yen (about US$33,000) each for  the restoration of the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. 

 

We hope to make new connections with you through this project. We appreciate your kind support.

◇Introduction to Fukugonji Temple

 

Fukugonji Temple, located in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a temple of the Ōbaku sect. It serves as the family temple of the Tachibana clan, the lords of the Yanagawa domain. In the main hall's memorial tablet hall, the ancestral tablets of the Tachibana family are enshrined. Behind the main hall, the Tachibana family mausoleum houses the remains of the clan's founder, Bekki Dōsetsu, the first lord of Yanagawa domain, Tachibana Muneshige, and successive lords of Yanagawa.

Particularly, Tachibana Muneshige, who relocated to Fukugonji in Yanagawa, is renowned as a "revived" feudal lord. He remained loyal to his benefactor (Toyotomi Family), stuck to the Western Army in the Battle of Sekigahara of 1600, knowing it is the losing side while many other lords switched to the winning side. As a result, he suffered defeat and was stripped of his lands. However, he was later reinstated as a feudal lord and uniquely restored to his former territory because he was remembered as the fierce warrior that prioritized loyalty and honor over gain.

 

Currently, Fukugonji Temple uses the theme of "revival" as it restores the temple and seeks to become a place where visitors can feel revitalized, healed, and connected. It aims to be a place where people can "revive." 

 

 

 

◇Introduction to the Sacred Kannon

 

In the Tenno Hall of Fukugonji Temple sits the Sacred Kannon (Maitreya Bodhisattva in seated form) with its hair elegantly tied up. The Kannon Bodhisattva is a deity who listens to the cries for salvation and transforms  its appearance freely to save people. It is believed that the Kannon Bodhisattva can take on thirty-three different appearances to provide rescue.

At Fukugonji Temple, this Sacred Kannon also dispels calamities for those who visit and brings blessings on their return. It is a deity that we aspire to restore to its original form so that it can continue to save people and deliver happiness for the next 5.67 billion years. 

 

 

 

◇Introduction to The Four Heavenly Kings

 

The Four Heavenly Kings are deities that protect the four directions: Jikokuten (East), Zōchōten (South), Kōmokuten (West), and Tamonten (North). Historically, they have been enshrined in places such as Hōryū-ji and Tōdai-ji temples, and have been fervently worshipped by emperors and nobility as guardians of state temples. They also attracted the faith of many warlords who prayed for victory in battle. At Fukugonji Temple, these deities are revered as protectors of the temple and its visitors, and are cherished as figures to be passed down to future generations.
